Event description

Description

This 3 part workshop series is on integrative mind-body-energy practices that help release stress, build resilience, and gain serenity. Each session will focus on different but overlapping sets of practices.

Each session will include mindfulness-based practices such as meditation and conscious breathing, as well as strengthening postures, restorative flowing movements, body-energy sensing, and inspirational sounds and rhythms that help to energize the body while releasing tension. Using conscious breathing during the meditation improves the flow of oxygen; thus, enhancing its benefits. Also, using proper body posture and alignment during the meditation can help us feel more grounded and elevated; therefore, positively affecting the way we see ourselves.

Most practices will be performed sitting on a chair or standing, focusing on those that can be easily and safely performed during short breaks from our daily routines, and even while at work or waiting for a doctor’s appointment or medical procedure. A few of the practices will be performed sitting on a bolster or lying on the floor, but the participants may sit on a chair if they prefer.

The rationale for each practice will be explained and modified versions will be discussed to help meet individual needs and/or preferences. Handouts will be distributed during the event.

Instructor: Dr. MariaLi Ramos-Cancel PhD

About Myself:

"I am a Psychology professor, a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and cancer survivor. About 22 years ago I was introduced to Kundalini Yoga, which focuses heavily on meditation and conscious breathing. Since then, I have been taking classes and workshops in Kundalini Yoga, and about twelve years ago I completed teacher training in Kundalini Yoga. I have continued to take advanced training in meditation and conscious breathing; as well as training that focus on body-energy sensing, mindful flowing movements, therapeutic touch, and relaxation techniques (Yoga Nidra). My mother was the person who introduced me to Kundalini Yoga and other mind-body wellness systems. She was a serious long-time practitioner of Kundalini Yoga and Qigong. Performing these practices with my mother during her journey with cancer brought us much closer together and encouraged me to pursue training in Kundalini Yoga and other mind-body wellness systems. The practices were also helpful in dealing with the challenges of our own personal cancer journey. Sharing these practices with fellow cancer survivors and others impacted by cancer is something that is close to my heart."
