Event description

Description

If you've ever tried to use a Raspberry Pi in one of your projects, or put a webpage on the web, you've probably run into the command line.

This interface, that has barely changed since the 70's, is still going strong because it allows you to efficiently control a remote computer like a Pi or Amazon instance. It also gives you a window into the inner workings of your own computer, allowing you to make changes and fixes that aren't possible through apps and GUIs. Plus, it totally makes you look like a 1337 H4x0r while working on your laptop at the coffee shop.

This class will be a no-experience-necessary gentle introduction that will help you learn all the most important commands, while practicing using them on a remote machine.

Topics will include:
- configuring your shell
- navigating the filesystem
- your new favorite commands
- file permissions and root
- remote logins with ssh and file transfer with scp
- just enough git commands to be dangerous

Be sure to bring your laptop to class.

This class will be taught by NYC Resistor members Holly Hudson and Jonathan Dahan. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.
