Intro to Command Line

NYC Resistor is a hacker collective with a shared space located in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. We meet regularly to share knowledge, hack on projects together, and build community. Our interests range from laser-cutting to knitting, and programming to pop-up books.All NYC Resistor events are strictly 18+, and attendees are expected to abide by our Code of Conduct, which can be found at https://www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

<DIV>If you've ever tried to use a Raspberry Pi in one of your projects, or put a webpage on the web, you've probably run into the command line.<BR></DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>This interface, that has barely changed since the 70's, is still going strong because it allows you to efficiently control a remote computer like a Pi or Amazon instance.  It also gives you a window into the inner workings of your own computer, allowing you to make changes and fixes that aren't possible through apps and GUIs.  Plus, it totally makes you look like a 1337 H4x0r while working on your laptop at the coffee shop.<BR></DIV>

<DIV>This class will be a no-experience-necessary gentle introduction that will help you learn all the most important commands, while practicing using them on a remote machine.<BR></DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Topics will include:<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- configuring your shell<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- navigating the filesystem<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- your new favorite commands<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- file permissions and root<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- remote logins with ssh and file transfer with scp<BR></DIV>
<DIV>- just enough git commands to be dangerous<BR></DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Be sure to bring your laptop to class.<BR></DIV>

<DIV>This class will be taught by NYC Resistor members Holly Hudson and Jonathan Dahan. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct.
