Full Stack of Pancakes

Your beginner's introduction to the most basic skills needed to build your own website.

September 17th-23rd is <A HREF="https://codingweek.org/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">National</A><A HREF="https://codingweek.org/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Coding Week</A>, so every day Full Stack Of Pancakes is hosting workshops to get Manchester coding.
In this workshop, we're going to learn about and play with the building blocks of web design - HTML, and CSS, as well as Git, a tool to help you save and share your code. You'll leave having built your first web page, learned where coding can take you and how you can get there!

What are  HTML and CSS?
HyperText Markup Language aka HTML is the language we use to build every web page or web application. Cascading Style Sheets aka CSS is the language we use to control the visual elements of web pages and web applications. They're the first languages that every coder learns as it's easy to master with a little practice and a fundamental part of any coders skill set. 
What is Git?
Git is a tool to help you save, share, and manage your code.  Virtually every professional software developer working today, uses Git on a daily basis.  Employers sometimes use it to check out the public portfolio of prospective employees, so the earlier you start, the more confident you'll be by the time you need to use it to collaborate with a team.
 
Who is this workshop for?
Any adult with an active interest in learning to code! You'll already be confident with using a computer and web browsers, you might have already started learning to code HTML and CSS for example, this workshop will enhance your existing skill-set. For newbie coders, this workshop will be a fun introduction to the world of development.  
I'm interested but I've never coded before, can I still come?
Absolutely! This workshop is designed specifically for total novices, our mentors are briefed to keep jargon to a minimum, and as well as a friendly lecture we'll provide visual aids for you to refer to. This workshop will be a safe space to ask all the questions you need to, all of us are here and excited to support you on your coding journey. 
What do I need to bring?
Your laptop, its charger, and bags of enthusiasm to face a bit of challenge. If you don't have your own laptop let us know and we'll try and find you one. 
Coding is hungry work, will there be food and refreshments?
Sponsors have kindly provided our refreshments and food for the evening, there will be; water, tea, coffee, soft drinks. There will also be vegan food available! If you have any specific dietary requirements please contact the organiser. 
How accessible is this venue?
Federation House is wheelchair accessible and if you have a disability that requires an assistant (eg. sign language translator) they may join as your plus one, no need to order an extra ticket for them. We are aiming to recruit mentors who have different mother tongue to help out ESL students - further details to come.

Code of conduct
Full Stack of Pancakes is dedicated to providing a safe and encouraging environment in which to learn how to code. To do so, we ask you to treat others as you expect to be treated. Any threatening, sexual, bullying or generally harassing behaviours are taken very seriously and if you are found exhibiting any you will be asked to leave. If you are ever made to feel uncomfortable due to the behaviour of another participant, the organisers and mentors will be there to support you in a non-judgemental and confidential way. Work hard, be nice.
 
Data collection and your privacy
We respect your privacy as if it was our own, any information you give us is collected and anonymised to help us get a better over all picture of our students and their coding experiences.With this we can discover how to how we might improve the design of future workshops for everyone.
Last year with the help of National Coding Week, we used our attendee data to create an <A HREF="https://icons8.com/articles/what-is-an-infographic/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">infographic</A> showing who came to our event, this year we’ll be able to proudly share a more detailed picture of any progress we have made on delivering inclusive and diverse workshops.
