About this event

  • 2 hours

In this workshop we will demystify Ashtanga yoga. We will outline a brief general history of the roots of Ashtanga yoga and how it is, in essence, the springboard for most of what we call “vinyasa” classes these days. We’ll talk about the main tenants and focal points of the practice, describe the difference between Mysore style and led class, and discuss the benefits of a portable self practice. We’ll explore the intention of the primary series (yoga chikitsa or yoga therapy), and most importantly, we’ll do some practice together. The experiential piece is crucial to correct knowledge and an integrated understanding. Timothy will also likely share some funny stories from his own experiences of his many years of dedicated practice and study.

This workshop is for anyone who has curiosity about Ashtanga yoga. It is for all experience levels. All bodies are embraced and welcome.

We will allow time for questions and answers.

Tickets for this workshop are $45.

***We offer student, educator, elder and BIPOC discounts! Reach out to events@mygreenyogi.com for more info.

Timothy Lynch

Timothy founded Mysore Oakland in 2014 - a six morning a week Mysore program in California. He guided this thriving community of practitioners for three and a half years before relocating back to Brooklyn, NY (where he had previously spent 20 years) with his family in 2017. During that time, he was a Mysore room guide at the Shala Yoga House five mornings a week in Manhattan.

In October 2019, Timothy returned to the Bay Area and planted the seeds for Atha, a six morning a week Mysore Ashtanga yoga practice space. He has been guiding the community since. He has taught in NYC, San Francisco, Oakland, Bali, Costa Rica, and Berkeley, CA.

He is grateful for the support and guidance of Eddie Stern, Rolf and Marci Naujokat, Sharath Jois, Sharmila Desai, Peter Sanson, Dr. Nagaraja Rao, and the late S.N. Goenka of the Vipassana tradition. He is also honored to have had the pleasure of working with and learning from all of the amazing humans who have stepped into our community spaces and shared a part of themselves and their efforts over the years. He recognizes the enormous privilege it has been to have made nine extended trips to India to study. He is humbled and indebted to the people and traditions of India, which have been and continue to be a great source of inspiration, confrontation, and mystery.

Timothy has a degree in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts, NYC and in 2023 finished three years of Waldorf teacher training at the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training. He has worked as a parent educator since 2021 and facilitates a parent education + support group at Berkeley Rose Waldorf School in Berkeley, CA. The group is oriented towards building a greater understanding of the developmental arch of childhood from birth to 7 years of age.
