Intro to American Whiskey – An ELIXIR Whisk(e)y Geeks course

An informational guided tasting of American whiskey lead by industry experts

From the beginner to the connoisseur, this class will have something for everyone! Bourbon, Rye, Single Malt, Blended...What's the difference? What is "American whiskey" and how does it different from whiskies from other places? And what's the difference between "whiskey" and "whisky"?

Learn it all in a fun and interactive format from the experts at ELIXIR, a bar named as one of the "Top Whisky Bars in America" by Whisky Advocate magazine and "99 Best Bourbon Bars in America" by The Bourbon Review.

ELIXIR is now offering an extensive American whiskey course to clear the air about all of these intricacies. Learn how the different styles of American whiskey are made, the fascinating histories behind them, and explore the nuances of their flavors and aromas in order to appreciate each for what they are, while finding your favorites.

We will taste you through EIGHT different whiskies, including:

  1. Unaged ("white whiskey", "moonshine", "white dog" - what do these words mean?) - Jack Daniels
  2. American Blended - Tin Cup
  3. Corn - Mellow Corn
  4. Bourbon 1: Bottled in Bond -  Evan Williams (traditional mash bill - 78/10/12)
  5. Bourbon 2: Small Batch - Four Roses (high rye - blend of four high rye whiskeys)
  6. Bourbon 3: Wheated - Maker’s Mark
  7. Bourbon 4: Rye recipes- Bulleit Rye (high rye, plus we'll discuss low rye and "traditional")
  8. American Single Malt - Westward

The American Whiskey renaissance continues to expand and all styles of American whiskey continue to experience major growth year after year. A thorough exploration like this will put you in a good place to understand it all, and enhance your appreciation of these fine spirits.

Topics include:

  • definitions and laws surrounding each category
  • the differences between Tennessee and Kentucky, Single Malt and Wheated, Rye and Bourbon, Single Barrel and Small Batch.
  • the steps of distillation and discuss the process known as “Sour Mash”
  • source material and its contribute to flavor
  • mash bills, yeast strains, and maturation and the impact each step has on the final product
  • history and debunking common myths

Come see for yourself and learn why American whiskey is one of the most popular spirits categories in the world.

About ELIXIR Whiskey Geeks

Whiskey Geeks are what we lovingly call our fans and customers at ELIXIR. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and whatever other descriptor you can think of, and they are all welcome here. We think "geek" is an affectionate term for someone who really loves a topic, and our topic is drinks, with whiskies of all sorts being our favorites.

ELIXIR Whiskey Geeks is just a wekly email list (for now). It is designed to give our friends and neighbors access to reputable thought leaders in the world of all spirits (not just whisk(e)y) as well as updates on everything ELIXIR. By providing "edutainment events" at ELIXIR, we give the geek in everyone a chance to ask questions, taste new things, and meet the people that bring them to us.

Everyone wins when they join Elixir Whiskey Geeks. Sign up for our newsletter at www.ElixirSF.com/whiskey-geeks and you'll not only get weekly news of our upcoming events, you'll get exclusive news on discounts and specials for newsletter subscribers only. If you're not on the list, you're not a registered Elixir Whiskey Geek! #toeornottoe is indeed the question.

We're all about education and entertainment. We believe the our collective drinking culture is a key part of our overall culture, and as such, understanding it aids in enjoying it to the max. We call it "Cocktail Edutainment". Though we go to great lengths to educate our team in the details (on a professional level), we understand that our primarily role is as providers of hospitality, not just drinks. So the education we provide to our guests in the bar is the same as in these classes: it's all about fun! So pick a class, share it with friends, have a great time, and come back for more. We're always scheduling more free and paid events, so click the FOLLOW button on our profile here, follow our social media (@elixirsf on Instagram and /elixirsaloon on Facebook) and sign up for our email newsletter at http:/www.elixirsf.com/whiskey-geeks . ELIXIR is first and foremost a neighborhood bar that has served its neighbors for 165 years. That history also makes the bar a San Francisco historic site and true piece of Old West culture. Under the proprietorship of noted barman H. Joseph Ehrmann and his team of award-winning hospitality professionals, the bar has won a place on numerous "Best Bars" lists for everything from its insane whiskey collection and pioneering cocktails to leadership in green business and its popularity as a business networking hang-out.
