<p><strong><strong>Opportunities for Industry/University Collaboration in NY State</strong></strong></p><p><br></p><p>CEIS and the Center of Excellence in Data Science at the University of Rochester are kicking off a series of events on "Intelligent Imaging" to explore the intersection of Imaging and Artificial Intelligence. Rochester has a rich legacy in Imaging and is well-positioned to lead in this area. The University of Rochester and RIT both have strong educational and research programs in imaging and AI.</p><p><br></p><p>In industry, there are over 30 companies in Rochester that specialize in the fields of imaging and/or AI or have large programs in these areas, including Carestream, L3Harris, VisualDx, FLX AI and JADAK. With this rich combination of industrial and academic expertise, the Rochester region is well-positioned to become a leader in this area.</p><p><br></p><p>To spur local economic development based on Intelligent Imaging we will be holding a series of events open to the public. One objective is to spur more industry/university collaboration. Such collaborations, when they involve a company with operations in New York State, are eligible for support from CEIS and the COE in Data Science. Our first event will be in the form of a panel session consisting of leading area experts from academia and industry. We hope you can attend. A Zoom link will be provided for registratnts. </p>

<h3>About the Presenters</h3><p><br></p><h4>Dr. Nebojsa Duric</h4><p>Nebojsa Duric received a Ph.D. degree in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 1984. After a 20-year astrophysics career, he embarked on a new career in medical imaging, first at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA, and now with the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA, where he works as a Professor and the Vice Chair of the Research in the Imaging Sciences Department. He has been a leader in the development of ultrasound tomography and its ultimate commercialization for breast cancer screening by Delphinus Medical Technologies, a company he co-founded, in 2010. He has over 200 publications and received numerous research grants, from sponsors that include NIH, NSF, DoD, and NASA. Dr. Duric in recognition of his work, received the Michigan Innovator of the Year Award from the State of Michigan and a Distinguished Innovator Award from Wayne State University. He was also named a Hero of Breast Cancer by the Detroit Chapter of Race for the Cure, recognizing excellence in breast cancer research and education.</p><p><br></p><h4>Dr. Jiebo Luo</h4><p>Jiebo Luo joined the University of Rochester in Fall 2011 after over fifteen prolific years at Kodak Research Laboratories, where he was a Senior Principal Scientist leading research and advanced development. He has been involved in numerous technical conferences, including serving as general co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2018 and IEEE ICME 2024, and program co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2010, IEEE CVPR 2012, and IEEE ICIP 2017. He has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, Pattern Recognition, Machine Vision and Applications, and Journal of Electronic Imaging. Dr. Luo served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia for the 2020-2022 term. Dr. Luo is a Fellow of ACM, AAAI, IEEE, IAPR, and SPIE, as well as a Member of Academia Europaea (AE) and the US National Academy of Inventors (NAI). He received the ACM SIGMM Technical Achievement Award in 2021.</p><p><br></p><h4>Dr. Eli Saber</h4><p>Dr. Saber is a Professor in the Electrical and Microelectronic Engineering (EME) Department of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering (KGCOE) and an extended faculty of the Center for Imaging Science in the College of Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Prior to that, he worked for Xerox Corporation from 1988 until 2004 in a variety of positions ending as Product Development Scientist and Manager at the Business Group Operations Unit. He received the BS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from the University of Buffalo in 1988, and the MS and PhD degrees in the same discipline from the University of Rochester in 1992 and 1996 respectively. From 1997 until 2004, he was an adjunct faculty member at of EME Dept. at RIT and at the ECE Dept. of the University of Rochester. His research interests are in the areas of digital image and video processing, remote sensing, biomedical imaging and computer vision. He is a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a former member of the Image and Multi-dimensional Digital Signal Processing (IMDSP) Technical Committee and former member and past chair of IEEE Industry Technology Committee (ITT). He served as an Associate editor for the IEEE Transaction on Image Processing and as an Area Editor for the Journal of Electronic Imaging. He has served on several conference committees including Finance chair for ICIP 2002, Tutorial Chair for ICIP 2007 and ICIP 2009, General Chair for ICIP 2012, Technical Program Chair for ICASSP 2017 and plenary chair for ICIP 2021. He has founded and served as the General Chair for the Video Surveillance and Transportation Imaging Conference held annually at the SPIE/IS &amp; T Electronic Imaging Symposium. </p><p><br></p><h4>Dr. Robert Fiete</h4><p>Dr. Bob Fiete is Chief Technologist and Senior Fellow at L3Harris, where he developed the image chain modeling approach for assessing and optimizing the image quality of complex imaging system designs and advanced processing algorithms. He was an adjunct professor at the Center for Imaging Science at RIT, chaired conferences and seminars on imaging and optics, briefed the National Security staff at the White House Situation Room, briefed the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in a congressional hearing, and worked with the FBI and DOJ investigating seventeen criminal cases involving image exploitation. Dr. Fiete has authored three books, five book chapters, and over forty technical papers. He was the inaugural editor of the SPIE Spotlights book series and has received twelve patents, including one for a method used to focus many of the current imaging satellites and another for an image enhancement method used on the Harry Potter movies. Dr. Fiete was awarded the Rudolf Kingslake Medal by SPIE, is a Senior Member of OSA and SPIE, and is a Fellow of SPIE.</p><p><br></p>
