The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University (CLACS), Cinema Tropical, and the World Council of Peoples for the United Nations / What Moves You?, present a screening of Andrea Cordoba's Sanctuary (2019), as part of the Fall edition of INDOCUMENTALES - an itinerant film and conversation series focused on experiences of US/Latin American migration.
The series is free and open to the public. All screenings are followed by panel discussions meant to bring together filmmakers, scholars, activists, policy makers, and community representatives concerned with the fortification of immigrant rights. 
Screening to be followed by a conversation with filmmaker Andrea Cordoba. Moderated by Shamina de Gonzaga, Executive Director, WCPUN and Co-founder/facilitator, INDOCUMENTALES.

Sanctuary (2019) Andrea Cordoba, United States 2018, 73 mins. In Spanish with English subtitles) 
Amanda Morales walked into a church in NYC not knowing when she would step outside again. The Guatemalan mother of three U.S. born children is the first immigrant since President Trump took office to claim sanctuary in New York, publicly resisting her deportation within a space that ICE recognizes as protected. Sanctuary gains rare and intimate access to Amanda and her family as they fight to remain together and adapt to life inside of the church. The main narrative focuses on the ways in which the church becomes both sanctuary and prison for Amanda. We watch her endure the struggles of maintaining a stable family unit despite being unable to partake in normal activities such as taking her children to school or buying groceries. Though ICE has labelled her a ‘fugitive’, we see her as a loving and affectionate mother to her three young children and a valued member of her community. The film explores the overlooked issue of trauma faced by children of undocumented parents. At the ages of 10, 8 and 3 respectively, Dulce, Daniela and David must confront the possibility that their mother may not be there when they return from school, rendering them ‘ICE Orphans’.The film also follows the development of grassroots efforts to defend and protect immigrants. Two secondary characters, Rev. Dr. Luis Barrios and Father Juan Carlos Ruiz, bridge Amanda’s story to the development of the New Sanctuary Movement, an interfaith network standing in solidarity with undocumented families. Through them, Sanctuary examines the expanding political and secular role that the church plays for communities in the absence of federal security for residents in so-called sanctuary cities and states. 
About the Director:
Andrea Cordoba is a Mexican documentary filmmaker based in New York. For the past 6 years, she has worked as a visual storyteller exploring the medium in relation to immigrant and Latinx voices. Andrea's directorial feature debut Sanctuary, about undocumented immigrant Amanda Morales taking physical sanctuary in order to fight her deportation, premiered at the Brooklyn Film Festival in the summer of 2019. Previously, she worked as a researcher on Pamela Yates’ 500 Years (2017) and as archival coordinator on Andrea Weiss’s Bones of Contention (2017). Most recently she served as associate producer on Harvest Season (2019) and as Co-Producer on a forthcoming 30 for 30 (ESPN) documentary feature about endurance runners in Mexico directed by Bernardo Ruiz. She received her BA in Anthropology and Journalism from NYU and an MFA in Social Documentary Film from the School of Visual Arts.
About the series:
INDOCUMENTALES began in May of 2010 as Indocumentales: the US/Mexico Interdependent Film Series with screenings and panel discussions at New York University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center and other venues throughout the five boroughs including the Americas Society and Cervantes Institute in Midtown Manhattan, the Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem, the Casita Maria Center for the Arts in the Bronx, the Beacon Center for the Arts in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and the Queens Museum in Corona, New York. It since traveled across the U.S., as well as to Mexico and Canada, engaging diverse communities in reflecting on their relationship to the questions posed in the films.
