The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University (CLACS), Cinema Tropical, and the World Council of Peoples for the United Nations / What Moves You?,  are proud to announce the official re-launch of INDOCUMENTALES - a film and conversation series committed to exploring the multiplicity of Latin American migrant experiences in our country through compassionate representation and critical dialogue.
INDOCUMENTALES began in May of 2010 as Indocumentales: the US/Mexico Interdependent Film Series with screenings and panel discussions at New York University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center and other venues throughout the five boroughs including the Americas Society and Cervantes Institute in Midtown Manhattan, the Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem, the Casita Maria Center for the Arts in the Bronx, the Beacon Center for the Arts in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and the Queens Museum in Corona, New York. It since traveled across the U.S., as well as to Mexico and Canada, engaging diverse communities in reflecting on their relationship to the questions posed in the films.
The series is free and open to the public. All screenings are followed by panel discussions meant to bring together filmmakers, scholars, activists, policy makers, and community representatives concerned with the fortification of immigrant rights.

 LA CIUDAD (David Riker, USA, 1998, 88 min. In Spanish, English, and Korean with English subtitles)
Four gritty stories chronicle the Latino immigrant experience in New York City. In the first, desperate day laborers risk their lives working in unsafe conditions for low pay. Then, newcomer Francisco (Cipriano Garcia) gets a respite from loneliness when he meets a kindhearted woman. Next, homeless puppeteer Luis (Jose Rabelo) battles bureaucracy to register his daughter for school. Finally, garment worker Ana (Silvia Goiz) struggles for the paycheck that could save her sick daughter's life.

About the Director:
David Riker is an award-winning director, screenwriter, and editor, working in both fiction and documentary forms. His debut feature, La Ciudad (The City), premiered at Toronto to critical acclaim, and won awards at South by Southwest, San Sebastian, Havana, and the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, among others. His second feature, The Girl, starring Abbie Cornish and Will Patton, won the NHK Award for Best American Screenplay at Sundance in 2009.
As a screenwriter, Riker has received a number of prestigious awards including the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance in 2008 for his work with Alex Rivera on Sleep Dealer. Most recently, he co-wrote with Jeremy Scahill the documentary Dirty Wars about the global war on terror. The film was nominated in 2014 for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, as well as the Writers Guild of America award for Best Documentary Screenplay.
The recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Annenberg Fellowships for his work as both writer and director, Riker also teaches screenwriting and directing, most recently at Columbia University’s Graduate Film Program. He has also taught directing and writing workshops at universities across the country as well as in Mexico, Cuba, and at FiSahara, the only film and film education festival that takes place in a refugee camp. He earned an MFA in Film from New York University in 1996.
