Join Afro Charities at Washington College for an engaging afternoon with Jason Patterson as we explore the intersections of history and art.

Join Afro Charities at Washington College in Chestertown, MD for an engaging afternoon exploring the intersections of art, history and community. Artist Jason Patterson will share insights into his art practice, which draws on archival materials and cultural memory to illuminate overlooked details from Black history.

Following Jason’s presentation, a panel discussion will feature Darius Johnson, Director of Chesapeake Heartland, and Jaelon T. Moaney of the Starr Center and Vice Chair of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC). Together, they will discuss the rich and complex history of Chestertown and the ways that local histories shape our understanding of national narratives.

After the panel, guests are invited to join a short walking tour of a historic section of Chestertown’s Black community, ending with a visit to Jason Patterson’s studio, for a closer look at his process. Light refreshments will be served.
