Lucy Hayes was nicknamed “Lemonade Lucy” after her time in the White House and is one of the many remarkable First Ladies of the United States with a rich and complex history. Most well-known for her care of wounded infantry soldiers, the life of Lucy Webb Hayes is one also denoted by temperance, education, and advocacy.

Presented in-person at the National First Ladies Library & Museum as well as streamed online, this family-friendly Legacy Lecture will be followed by a “lemonade social” – a nod to the exceptional Lucy Hayes. For those joining us via Zoom, a Lucy Lemonade Recipe card will be sent to your email prior to the event so that you can make your own and toast to the beginning of summer.

About Sarah Hayden:

Know that spark when you meet someone new, and you know immediately you’ll be friends? That’s how Sarah Hayden felt when introduced to the life and legacy of First Lady of the United States Lucy Webb Hayes.

A resident of Canton, Sarah has volunteered at the National First Ladies Library & Museum over the years as a docent and in first-person interpretation of the wife of the 19th President, Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881). Honored to interpret Lucy’s contributions to the nation and to her family, Sarah dresses in a custom gown based on one of Lucy’s reception dresses.

A marketing professional for many years, Sarah has happily researched Lucy’s many accomplishments at a time when women were becoming more visible in a new era of industrial, educational, and social life. Sarah leans on her journalism degree from Ohio University and her Masters in Organizational Leadership from Malone University to share her interpretation of one of Ohio’s most popular First Ladies. A mother and stepmother of five, Sarah understands the demands of a working woman and family.
