Theodore is a philosopher and writer. His books include An intimate History of Humanity, Conversation, How Talk can change Lives and The Hidden Pleasures of Life as well as a number of celebrated studies of French life and culture. He is a member of the British Academy and a commander of the Légion d’Honneur.
