IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild™ is an outdoor concert series where America’s most stunning landscapes replace the traditional concert hall. Guests explore the surrounding environment while listening to the music through wireless headphones, creating an immersive experience that fosters a connection with the music, nature, and with one another. About this location
This late afternoon concert will take place at Fort Rock State Natural Area in Fort Rock, Oregon. Towering above the sagebrush desert, the Fort Rock caldera was once a volcano that erupted under an inland sea. Waves lapping against the rock created caves that housed a shoe ‘factory’ where anthropologist Luther Cressman discovered an ancient collection of ten-thousand year old sandals in 1938. The piano will be situated in the open area on the eastern side of the bowl, slightly below the site of our past concerts. Concert check-in opens at 3:00 pm, and the performance begins at 4:00 pm.
Come early for a visit to the Fort Rock Valley Historical Homestead Museum (ticket included with your purchase), a collection of original homestead era buildings including a church, school, houses, homestead cabins, and several other structures in a village setting.
After the concert, follow Hunter down to the Fort Rock Grange for our 2nd annual Pie Social and “Barn” Dance featuring live country & folk music by Wampus Cat! Pie & ice cream will be available for a $5 suggested donation, with all profits going to benefit the Fort Rock Grange and their community activities.
This event takes place on the traditional land of several nations including the Yahooskin, and The Confederated Tribes of Umatilla going back to time immemorial.
Accessibility and other FAQs
This is one of our “wildest” locations in the series. Parking at this site is extremely limited and we encourage carpooling. Guests may have to park up to 1/2 mile from the parking lot, depending on roadside parking availability so please plan ahead. There will be a drop-off area in the parking lot for guests, chairs, and picnics. The walk from the parking lot to the concert site is difficult. It consists of a 1/4-mile hike up a steep rocky path. The concert site is amongst sagebrush on uneven terrain with no shade available. There will be a limited shuttle available for those with mobility issues. Please see the FAQ section below for additional details on accessibility, dogs, food, and other answers about this specific location.
