About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

As your spring crops fade, you may wonder what to do in the garden over the summer. If you are planning to go on vacation, don't have time to actively garden, or just don't want to deal with the heat, try improving your garden soil. This class will present two methods of improving your garden soil: Solarization and Cover Crops.

The class consists of 2 parts:

  1. A presentation and discussion indoors at our Urban Garden Field Office. In this portion of the class, we'll discuss the benefits of solarization and cover crops and how to implement them.
  2. A hands-on activity outdoors in our Urban Demonstration Garden. During this time you will see how we are implementing solarization and cover crops, try your hand at solarizing a bed, and be able to ask all kinds of questions.

Because part of this course is hands-on and outdoors, please wear:

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and anything else you need to be comfortable in the heat.

Participants will take home summer cover crop seeds!
