The Documentary is an improv format that builds upon the audience's suggestion of a made-up place or event. Learn about this unique style!

These workshops are for people who love jumping into the unknown with nothing but instinct, a half-formed idea, and maybe a weird voice...Or for anyone who wants to get better at saying “yes” to whatever weird curveball life throws at them. And then doing the “and” part...Each session is a standalone deep dive into a different part of improv — characters, scenes, games, brain-melting group stuff, or just saying both “yes” and “and.” Come to one. Come to five. Come to all of them and achieve full chaotic enlightenment.No experience needed. Just show up, stay present, and maybe bring a water bottle. Because it turns out that you can practice making stuff up.The Documentary: A Longform Format WorkshopThe documentary genre has radically evolved in recent years. As a broad term, 'Documentary' is used to describe a non-fiction movie that in some way "documents" or captures reality. Such shows can be funny, poignant, disturbing, absurd, inspirational, shocking or any combination! Such a genre is perfect for an improv format! Created by Billy Merritt for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre back in 2002, The Documentary is an improv format that builds upon the audience's suggestion of a made-up place or event. Through a fake factoid pattern game opening, 2 person and group scenes, improv teams create documentary-style stories that have never been seen before (or likely to be seen again!). If you are a fan of shows like 'Welcome to Wrexham', 'Merpeople', 'Tiger King', 'Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends', 'The Tinder Swindler', 'Cheer', 'Catwalk: Tales from the Cat Show Circuit', this is the workshop for you! In this class, we will go over the main structure of the Documentary as well as developing memorable characters, exploring the role of an active narrator and creating unusual group scenes.
