About the event
Join us for a 60-minute interactive workshop where a physiology educator (Dr. Akshata Naik) and a biochemistry educator (Dr. Jane Newman) share their strategies for creating an integrated TBL session for medical students. This session aims to provide a practical framework to create horizontally integrated TBL advanced prep materials, RATs, and application exercises. At the end of the workshop, educators will be able to develop innovative teaching modalities that integrate core disciplines and create TBL approaches for enriched student discussions.
Learning objectives
At the end of this online workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define horizontal and vertical integration.
- Describe a process for implementing integration into a TBL.
- Plan potential integration steps for topics of interest.
About the facilitators
Dr. Akshata Naik
Dr. Akshata Naik, a medical educator at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, earned her PhD in Physiology from Wayne State University in 2019. Recognized for her teaching excellence, she received the 2024 William Galey Scholarship Award from the American Physiological Society and IAMSE’s faculty travel award. Passionate about innovation and diversity in medical education, Dr. Naik has published in leading journals such as Endocrinology and Medical Science Educator and is dedicated to training learners at all levels.
Dr. Jane Newman
Dr. Jane Newman is an assistant professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies. She teaches biochemistry to medical students in their preclinical years. Her medical education research focus is on integrating biochemistry topics with other disciplines and biochemistry education through game-based learning. Dr. Newman received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from Indiana University studying biochemical mechanisms of transcription factors in quorum sensing systems within disease-causing Vibrio bacteria.
