The physiological effects of media have long been a subject of academic interest, but past research has typically been confined to physical lab environments that require expensive, complex equipment with steep learning curves. Recent advances in remote webcam-based tools have transformed this landscape, making it possible to integrate biosensor technology—such as eye tracking and facial expression analysis—into communications research in a more accessible and scalable way.

One of the most exciting developments is the ability to bring these tools directly into the classroom. By introducing students to biosensor technologies early in their education, we are seeing the emergence of a new generation of junior researchers and industry practitioners who enter the workforce with a distinct competitive edge.

Participants in this workshop will have a hands-on opportunity to explore these tools by collecting eye tracking and facial expression data on themselves. They’ll also gain insight into how these technologies are being integrated into methods courses and will be invited to begin designing their own studies using the same techniques.
