Panel discussion about the possibilities and limitations of AI as a solution to the climate crisis.

Join the JUST AI Deep Sustainability working group on Thursday, February 24th for a continued panel discussion about the possibilities and limitations of AI as a solution to the climate crisis. We will be joined by Professor Jennifer Gabrys, author of Program Earth: Environmental Sensing Technology and the Making of a Computational Planet, Dr. Paola Ricaurte, co-founder of Tierra Común, a network of activists, citizens and scholars who work on interventions for data decolonization, and Dr. Victor Galaz, author of Dark Machines, exploring the converging forces of a growing planetary crisis and technological change. The Panel will be chaired by Dr. Alison Powell, Director of the JUST AI Network and author of Undoing Optimization: Civic Action in Smart Cities.This is a free and online event open to anyone interested in the collaborative imagining and interrogation of critical tech and ecological justice discourses. Attendees will listen and speak with our panelists as they consider the tension between the material and immaterial infrastructures of AI while envisioning alternative environmental futures. Topics covered will include the counteractive impact of AI climate solutions, their concealed perpetuation through infrastructures, and opportunities for intervention. We hope to see you there!
