<h3>USING COOL-DOWNS TO PLAN INSTRUCTION with Illustrative Mathematics CURRICULUM</h3>How can studying student responses to a lesson’s cool-down impact instructional decisions in the next lesson? The purpose of this session is to provide strategies for using student responses to a lesson’s cool-down in planning for upcoming lessons. Teachers will gain an understanding of how cool-downs can be used as formative assessment for identifying what students know and can do, and for purposefully planning instruction to support access and challenge in future lessons. The protocol used in the session is also helpful for pacing, as teachers will practice making adjustments to lessons in the curriculum to address what they see in students’ responses. Teachers apply their learning to lessons in an upcoming unit, exploring the coherence and connections between lessons.Intended AudienceThis session will be useful after the first year of implementation or during the first year of implementation for teachers who are comfortable with the problem-based lesson structure after a few months of teaching with IM Math.Learning Goals<ul><li>Describe how cool-downs formatively assess lesson learning goals.</li><li>Anticipate student responses for cool-downs.</li><li>Make connections between cool-downs and current and upcoming lessons.</li><li>Recognize the value of using a protocol for making sense of student work.</li><li>Adjust warm-ups and activity launches or syntheses based on class responses to a cool-down.</li></ul>Notes on registration and fees<ul><li>MMSLN subsidizes the registration fee for all MMSLN Professional and Organizational Members to help offset the cost of Professional Learning certified by Illustrative Mathematics.</li><li>MMSLN has requirements for a minimum number of educators registered for each event. This event will be postponed or cancelled if that minimum number is not met. In that case, you will be notified of the cancellation, your registration fee will be reimbursed, and MMSLN will work with you to schedule alternate PL to meet your needs.</li></ul>
