Event description

Description

On May 14, one day prior to the 2018 EuropeanaTech Conference, EuropeanaTech, NDE (Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed) and the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) will host a special day long IIIF Showcase and Workshop at the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague. The event will provide those new to IIIF and those experienced with the framework and its tool a first hand and hands-on day filled with plenty of opportunities for discussions around sharing digital heritage collections with the world.

Over the past few years Europeana has turned its focus towards promoting and advocating for IIIF implementation by heritage institutes across Europe. This event will provide those in the Netherlands and abroad an opportunity to not just learn about what IIIF can do but to also begin working with it as well, giving participants a jump-start to adopting the standard at their home institutions.

On the morning of the 14th, participants will be welcomed at the National Library with coffee followed by an introduction to IIIF by Rob Sanderson from The Getty Institute as well as sectoral use cases from Dutch and international institutes already putting IIIF to good use. This morning will prove to be a spectacular showcase showing what IIIF is capable of facilitating and what our peers have gained from using the Framework.

** The afternoon will allow for a hands on working session facilitated by IIIF’s technical coordinator Glen Robson. The goal of this hands on session is to offer those new to IIIF a crash course in implementing the Framework, allowing them to go back to their institutes with something to show and first-hand experience.** -- this is now full but we have spaces for the afternoon unconference sessions lead by participants.

Alongside the hands on working session several unconference discussion session will take place regarding the growth, development and steering of IIIF.

Following the days events a “borrel” Dutch word for drinks and bites will take place in coordination with Wikidata allowing plenty of time for networking and mingling before the EuropeanaTech conference kicks off the next day.

About IIIF

IIIF is a community-drive initiative that has been adopted widely by libraries, museums, archives, software companies and other organizations in a remarkably short period of time. IIIF enables fast, rich zoom and pan delivery of images, manipulations, annotations, and the assemblage or comparison of images from other IIIF-based resources across the web, regardless of source. The more repositories that adopt it, the better it becomes as a shared resource. For more information, see: http://iiif.io/community/faq/
