The Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC) brings great minds together for the greater good—pushing the limits of what’s possible in the biosciences through collaboration with the greater scientific community.The organization is a collaboration of basic and translational scientists, researchers, clinicians and students in the quantitative biomedical sciences who help advance the region’s scientific progress through participation in joint training and research programs, utilization of shared equipment and core facilities, and the exchange of scientific knowledge.For more than a decade, the GCC has earned an unprecedented legacy for overcoming barriers between departments and institutions, increasing cooperation and collaborations, and training young scientists for future careers in the biomedical sciences.The organization’s programs and core facilities are supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT),  John S. Dunn Foundation, and its member institutions.

IDDD Round Table Workshop:  SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Update and Future Prospects

Dr. Alan Barrett is Director of the Sealy Institute for Vaccine Sciences and holds the John Sealy Distinguished University Chair in Vaccinology at the University of Texas Medical Branch and is a Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology &amp; Immunology. He is also Director, World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Vaccine Research, Evaluation and Training for Emerging Infectious Diseases. He was elected Fellow of the International Society for Vaccines in 2014 and Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2016. In 2018 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Warwick for his significant contributions to WHO vaccine research, development and implementation. Dr. Barrett’s research interests are the molecular basis of pathogenesis and vaccine development of flaviviruses (dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile, tick-borne encephalitis, yellow fever, and Zika). His research has resulted in him authoring more than 330 papers, reviews and book chapters. He has made several contributions to World Health Organization (WHO). He was chair of the Steering Committee on Vaccine Development for dengue and other flaviviruses (2004-2008) and has served on many WHO flavivirus vaccine working groups that prepare recommendations for the use of vaccines. Most recently he is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) that is developing vaccines for Ebola, Nipah, Lassa fever, MERS and COVID-19 (2016-present), and various vaccine working groups of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of Nature partner journal (npj) Vaccines (2015-present).He is a member of the editorial boards of eight journals: Virus Research, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of Medical Virology, Journal of Virological Methods, Journal of Virology, Virology, Clinical Vaccines and Immunology, and Pan Amazonian Health Journal. Finally, he has co-edited three books, including “Vaccines for Biodefense and Emerging and Neglected Diseases” with Larry Stanberry in 2008; (Academic Press); and in 2015 he co-edited, with Gregg Milligan, the first student textbook on vaccines, entitled “Vaccinology: An Essential Guide”, which was published by Wiley-Blackwell.Roger Nosal is Vice President &amp; Head of Global Chemistry, Manufacturing &amp; Controls at Pfizer. He is accountable for development, preparation &amp; prosecution of regulatory CMC applications for new commercial products &amp; investigational applications (small &amp; large molecules, combination products, vaccines, gene/cell therapies) globally. Roger was instrumental in development &amp; implementation of Quality by Design &amp; has advocated for global regulatory harmonization &amp; mutual reliance as PhRMA representative to several ICH Expert &amp; Implementation Working Groups (EWG &amp; IWG) since 1997 &amp; through more than 170 presentations at industry technical conferences. He is currently Rapporteur for the ICH IQDG &amp; PhRMA lead to ICH M9 EWG, BCS Biowaivers, was a PhRMA CMC expert for ICH Q12 IWG &amp; the 2013-2014 IQDG. Roger has served as Chair to several PhRMA, ICH, ISPE, PQRI, AAPS, IFPAC, ACS &amp; DIA technical committees. In 2013 Roger was awarded the Pharmaceutical Discovery, Development and Manufacturing Forum Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) for outstanding contributions to advancing QbD. Roger’s 39 years of experience at G. D. Searle, Monsanto, Pharmacia &amp; Pfizer, includes 26 years in regulatory affairs. Roger testified as an expert witness at the World Court in Geneva, Switzerland &amp; provided depositions in the US, EU and Brazil regarding patent infringement cases in 2004 &amp; 2005. Prior to his regulatory role, Roger was a Medicinal Chemist, author of 24 patents &amp; a Process Chemist, focused on synthetic development &amp; analytical control of derivatives of aspartame &amp; manufacture of prostaglandins.
