Idle Hands and SMC Brazil: Intro to SMC and the Cooxupé Cooperative followed by a Cupping!

Come join us at Loki Coffee - Salt Lake City, Utah for a special event where we'll be joined by the fine folks at SMC Brazil and Dionathan Almeida (2024 World Cup Tasters Champion) for an evening of coffee learning and cupping!

SMC are the specialty arm of the Cooxupé Cooperative, based in Guaxupé, MG in Brazil. They provide Idle Hands with beautiful coffees that are core parts of our blends, along with some of the fastest selling microlots on our menu each year.

After an introduction from Idle Hands, SMC will give a presentation to introduce themselves further and help paint a picture of coffee production in Brazil. We'll follow it all up with a cupping of the coffee's that Idle Hands has coming to the menu from SMC members; Fazenda das Almas (pictured above), Sitio Divisa, Sitio Maranhão (pictured below) and Sitio Mãe da Providencia.

Is it really free?

Yes, absolutely. All community cuppings hosted by Idle Hands are always free!

What is a cupping?

Cupping coffee is an internationally standardized way to assess the aroma and profile of a coffee. We'll be using a "double cupping" method due to it being a public cupping, and will run you through the basics of "how to" as the night moves along.

Who are SMC?

SMC are the specialty arm of, and also fully integrated into, the Cooxupé Cooperative. Their office and lab is about 5hr drive from São Paulo, in the small coffee town of Guaxupé, MG. The cooperative has high environmental standards and sustainability goals, and places emphasis on gender equity.

Who's Dionathan Almeida?

Dionathan is a dear friend, farm worker and QC manager at Fazenda Caxambu, and the 2024 World Cup Tasters Champion; with a world record setting time of 2min, 19sec!
