PDA is a rare, atypical profile of autism and its unusual presentation is a barrier to early identification. Traditional parenting and school settings negatively impact mental health and educational outcomes in the PDA autistic making it vital that Social Workers recognize these children in their practice.

This workshop will offer the participant the chance to peek inside a safe PDA practice space hearing the stories of day-to-day life and family struggles that will alert you in your own practice to look beyond mental health, behavior and parent education to identify PDA autism. Expect a short discussion on PDA best clinical practice with time remaining for questions.

Elise Jacobson, LICSW (she/her)

Elise specializes in the PDA profile of autism running her own accessible and accommodating insurance-based therapy practice for PDA parents and PDA adults. She is the founder of the national PDA Therapy Collaborative where she shares her writing on PDA affirming strength-based care and offers professional consults. She is a frequent presenter on PDA and will be a practice teacher this summer at Smith College SSW. As a PDA parent who was also recently identified she brings insight on the merging of the professional and the personal. She would like to encourage other professionals to develop their skill and confidence in both PDA affirming practice and PDA early identification so that no family who needs it goes without good information and support!
