IATI miniTAG: geo-coding and visually representing data

Join us December 14, 2017 in Washington, D.C. to talk about developments in geo-coding and visually representing project locations in open data for international development. 
IATI miniTAG
The<A HREF="http://www.aidtransparency.net/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> International Aid Transparency Initiative</A> (IATI) a voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiative that seeks to improve the transparency of aid, development, and humanitarian resources to increase their effectiveness in the fight against poverty. Bringing together donor and recipient countries, civil society organizations, and other experts in aid information, IATI provides a format and framework for organizations to publish data on development activities, known as the IATI Standard. 'MiniTAGs' are simply informal meetings on specific themes relevant to IATI (named after the larger Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting held annually by IATI members). 
Theme
The theme of this miniTAG is sub-national geolocation data. In order to find partners, improve collaboration and make smarter investments, organizations need to know who is doing what and where. Open data on development activities worldwide can provide this picture. Yet, ensuring that data contains accurate sub national locations and visualizing this data on a map is not always easy. This discussion will therefore cover questions like how can/should organizations publish location data (and how are they doing it now), how geo-coded project data can be visualized on maps, and what tools exist to help. 
Structure
Following<A HREF="https://medium.com/@johnthegeo/minitag-top-tips-f9357903ea83" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> lessons learned from the past miniTAG</A>s, this event will begin with a short introductory talk, followed by structured discussions. We expect a mix of representatives from bilateral donors, multilateral organizations, civil society and the private sector. The introductory talk will be given by representatives from the Open Ag Funding partnership, who will introduce attendees to the concepts above and the work being done by the Open Ag Funding Partnership.
Agenda 
9:00 am – 9:15 am: Welcome and introduction 
9:15 am –10:00 am: Sub-national locations and IATI Standard 2.0: what's in it? 
10:00 am –11:00 am: Tools for geo-coding: demo and discussion on the Open Ag auto-geocoder as well as other tools that make geolocations less painful for publishers.
11:00 am – 12:30 am: Representing locations visually: how should we put this data on maps? What are the (best) resources out there to build maps on individual websites and joint maps? 
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Break for lunch
1:30 pm – 2:30pm: Harmonizing practices around use of the IATI Standard for locations: a more detailed discussion of specific elements/attributes and priority elements to harmonize.
2:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Deep dive into potential solutions from the earlier sessions. 
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Document solutions to be followed by a write up for all participants.
