The International Association of Culinary Professionals is thrilled to invite Jessica Kehinde Ngo to IACP TALKS. The webinar delves into the potential for food writers and storytellers to use their voices to advocate for issues they care about. Attendees will learn how to craft stories that uplift food industry causes big and small ranging from overlooked dishes/cuisines, to struggling restaurants, to national and international movements. We’ll explore inspirational work such as award-winning cookbook author Grace Young’s #SaveChineseRestaurants hashtag and interview series, chef and cookbook author Pierre Thiam’s TED Talk and cookbook dedicated to uplifting the forgotten Senegalese ancient grain fonio, and freelance food writer Anna Mindess’ reviews to help struggling restaurants during the pandemic. At the end, Jessica will share writing exercises to assist attendees in getting their food advocacy juices flowing.

Jessica Kehinde Ngo is an Associate Professor of English at Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles and has led writing workshops for PEN America’s PEN in the Classroom program, the Creative Nonfiction Foundation, and the Hurston/ Wright Foundation. Her writing on food has appeared or is forthcoming in publications such as Epicurious, Whetstone, TASTE, the James Beard Foundation blog, The Counter, Stained Page News, Eaten, and Cuisine Noir. She was a 2022 - 2023 Legacy Network Advisee for the James Beard Foundation and a 2023 Winner of an IACP Food Writing Award. When not writing or teaching, she can be found frying plantain for her two French-Vietnamese-Nigerian-American sons.
