About this event

  • 8 hours

Join us for a day filled with insightful discussions on various topics related to Minnesota and the northern region. The event kicks off at 8:00 AM when Deb DeWitz will be presenting I Would Never Do That! The Impact of Socio-economic Class on Lifestyle Choices . The afternoon will include an The Many Layers of Ethics: a unique and honest look and a Personal Experience Panel

"I Would Never" will focus on how people may experience their world differently based on socioeconomic class. Various socioeconomic classes (chronic poverty, working class, and middle class) and societal subgroups (defined by group membership) will be presented. We will look at each group in terms of their potential differences in the formation of identity, family relationships, and approach to health care, friendships, support systems, goals, work, and their view of society. We will also look at how the world view of professionals may cloud our interpretation of behaviors we see in clients from classes other than our own.

"The Many Layers of Ethics" If you have a passion for services, then you MUST have a passion for the need to critique our work. Ethics presentations must not only tell us how we SHOULD be doing our work, but take a hard look at where we may be falling short. Many of us know that our work is done with too few dollars, too few staff, too few services, and too many clients. We do the best we can, but we often have to cut corners. We don’t like to think about that, but we must. We will look at the Code of Ethics and why it is not as simple as it sounds, how “the system” sees problems, why some of the “solutions” don’t work, and some case examples.
