Emilie-Anne Gendron, violin
Yelena Grinberg, piano
Dear Friends,
Emilie and I warmly invite you to an intimate home salon at my apartment on the Upper West Side as we explore the colorful and impassioned journey through an all-Hungarian program, with seldom-heard works for violin and keyboard by Haydn, Kodaly, Dohnanyi, Bartok, Kurtag, and Liszt.
Our program will open on a cheerful note with Haydn's rarely-heard, humorous and witty Sonata in G Major for violin and piano, Hob. XV:32 (ca. 1794), followed by Kodaly's deeply sad and moving Adagio in C Major for violin and piano (1905), and Dohnanyi's seldom-heard, lush and romantic Sonata in C-sharp minor for violin and piano, op. 21 (1911) to round off the first half. The second half of our program will begin with Bartok's riveting Rhapsody No. 1 for violin and piano (1928), originally the first of Bartok's two folk dances written for violin and orchestra that draws its inspiration from Hungarian folk music, followed by Kurtag's elusive and aphoristic Three Pieces for violin and piano (1971), and will culminate with Liszt's electrifying tour de force Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12 in C-sharp minor, in Liszt's own special, rarely-played arrangment for violin and piano (1850-59). This kaleidoscopic all-Hungarian program is NOT to be missed!!!
I look forward to seeing you all on March 25th!
