Human Trafficking Symposium

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety & Securityconducts all police and security operations at the University’s Ann Arbor campus and are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Created in October 2012 to unify security functions that previously were embedded within different areas of the University, DPSS offers a truly integrated approach to safety and security, partnering across the University and helping everyone in the U-M community to take charge of their own safety.The Michigan Medicine Department of Care Management is a team led by a Registered Nurse (RN) case-manager and a Social Worker. They partner with patients, families, doctors, nurses and other care providers to improve care coordination and prepare a safe discharge.

Attendees will gain an overview of what human trafficking is and how they can help victims that they may encounter in their field of practice, with a particular emphasis on healthcare settings. We will explore the root causes of human trafficking and our role in perpetuating and combating the underlying causes. We will take a critical perspective on what it means to help a victim of trafficking and well-meaning interventions, which may unwittingly cause the individual’s arrest or deportation. Further, we will examine guiding principles for successful engagement with this population, including trauma-informed care, cultural awareness, and harm reduction. Finally, we will hear about local resources that providers can use if they suspect a client is a victim of human trafficking.
