Here is some guidance to determine where you might fall in payment:PAY MORE ON THE SCALE IF YOU:<ul><li>own the home you live in, or are able to afford market-rate rent or higher.</li><li>have a relatively high degree of earning power due to level of education, gender and racial privilege, class background, etc. Even if you are not currently exercising your earning power, I ask you to recognize this as a choice.</li><li>have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money.</li><li>can be supported by generational wealth when times get tough.</li><li>have the ability to travel recreationally.</li><li>have access to family money and resources in times of need.</li><li>have the choice to work part time, or the choice not to work, due to the income of a partner or family support.</li><li>affording services is a sacrifice rather than a hardship. I.e. if you pay as much for other things or services that are of value to you, like shoes, or a class, or a splurge on a nice dinner out, or if accessing services would simply be a tradeoff with one of these things, you should be booking higher on the scale. </li></ul>PAY LESS ON THE SCALE IF YOU:<ul><li>are living on unemployment or limited income without backup financial support from a partner or family.</li><li>you are supporting yourself or your family on a minimum wage.</li><li>paying for a service would lead to a severe economic hardship, such as not being able to put food on the table, pay rent, or pay for your transportation to get to work.</li><li>are eligible for public assistance.</li><li>are supporting children or have other dependents</li><li>have significant debt</li><li>have medical expenses not covered by insurance</li><li>receive public assistance</li><li>have immigration-related expenses</li><li>are an elder with limited financial support</li><li>are an unpaid community organizer</li><li>are a returning citizen who has been denied work due to incarceration history</li></ul>
