***During The Months of May & June, A Very Special Exhibition Will Be Available For Viewing Throughout Both Floors Of The Gallery: "SALVADOR DALI AND THE AVANT-GARDE CIRCLE OF PIERRE ARGILLET" May 1-June 30, 2024.

MARK LEWIS (Saxaphonist & Flutist) has enlivened jazz scenes from Seattle and San Francisco to Rotterdam and Paris, and has created a vast and intensely stimulating body of music over the past four decades, including more than 1,700 compositions. Seattle music writer Paul de Barros calls Lewis “A distinctive original” and Earshot jazz sums up his sound: “Inspiring and fervent, saxophonist and flutist Mark Lewis shines with his impeccable, lyrical and emotive tone reminiscent of Art Pepper or Paul Desmond.”

Recent awards include Cadence Magazine Top Ten Critics Poll for 2021 for his album Naked Animals, and #2 on alto sax (after Richie Cole) and #3 on flute (after Charles Lloyd and Hubert Laws) in the 39th Annual Jazz Station Awards for his album The New York Session, a collaboration with piano legend George Cables, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Victor Lewis.

Rotterdam, the Netherlands was Mark's home base for many years. He toured and played in the better clubs throughout Europe, and taught jazz theory and improvised music classes in several music conservatories. Mark lived and performed for several years in San Francisco and Victoria, BC as well.

Jazz musicians Mark has performed and recorded with include pianists George Cables, Willem Kühne, Mark Levine, Overton Berry, Mike Renzi and Ted Gioia; drummers Victor Lewis, Candy Finch, Frans van Grinsven and Eddie Moore; bassists James Long, Hein van de Geyn, David Friesen, Larry Grenadier and Chuck Metcalf; saxophonists Noah Howard, Art Foxall and Paul Moen and the Saxophone Summit; trumpet player Randy Brecker; and vibraphonists Bobby Hutcherson and Lodewijk Bouwens. Mark often subbed for Stan Getz and John Handy during his time in San Francisco.

Music writer Ted Gioia, known as a leading global guide to music past, present and future, says of Mark Lewis: “You listen to the guys with the primo recording contracts on the very top labels, and in my opinion, they’re not in Mark’s league.”

“ This is melodic straight-ahead jazz at its best ” – Jazz Journal (UK)

“ A Northwest treasure ” – Jim Wilke, Jazz Northwest on KNKX

“ I feel like I’m getting transported to a whole other auditory universe ” – Joe Dimino, Neon Jazz

"There’s no one like Mark Lewis. He’s one of the best ever, from Bird through the rest. There’s a light that comes from his music. Sometimes it’s very intellectual at a very high level, but always there is the light." – Ron van Lubeck, Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Randy Halberstadt is a 2015 inductee to the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame and has won multiple awards from Seattle’s Earshot Jazz, including Northwest recording of the year and the Golden Ear. He has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., with the Seattle Symphony, and is the pianist for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. He has performed with Herb Ellis, Terry Gibbs, Buddy de Franco, Bobby Shew, Mel Brown, Jay Clayton, Ernestine Anderson and many others. Randy recently retired from a long time position as full professor at the prestigious Cornish College of the Arts and teaches annually at the Blaine Harbor Jazz Festival and at Jazz Port Townsend.

“ Formidable pianistic skills ” – World Jazz Scene

Phil Sparks is among the leading bassists in Seattle, having performed with nearly every top jazz group in the city. He’s a 2008 inductee to the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame, and records extensively with many of the Northwest's top players. Phil has worked with some of the top names in jazz including Gene Harris, James Moody, Bobby Shew, Mose Allison and Art Lande.

“ a star of the Seattle scene ” - Down Beat magazine.

Bob Merrihew studied music at North Seattle College and privately with Dave Coleman Sr., Bill Kotick and Otis ‘Candy’ Finch. Since then he has worked in a variety of musical settings including a 7-year run as house drummer at the Pioneer Square Theater for the longest sold out run of a musical in Seattle history, “Angry Housewives,” a steady gig at the New Orleans and a European tour with Mark Lewis. Bob was in the original Mark Lewis Quartet and their long association is obvious when you hear them perform together.

“ plays with such taste and support, never overriding the sound ” – Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys News
