About this event

  • 2 hours 30 minutes

On June 11, 2023, Nick Mireles, his son Mario Mireles-Ruiz, and their friend, Christian Segovia, were shot and killed while celebrating a birthday party in the Wiltshire neighborhood off Edgewood Road. Thirteen children were orphaned, three women were widowed, and three others were wounded.

The death of one victim, Nick Mireles, age 55, stole him from his wife, Sandra, and 8 children. Shortly before his murder, Nick and Sandra signed a 5-year lease-to-own contract to purchase their home in a supportive community where their children attend school. At the time of his death, Nick had paid two years of the agreement. The remaining amount due is now in jeopardy as Mrs. Mireles spends 100% of her time caring for the children.

Mrs. Mireles and her children not only risk losing the safety and security a home provides but also Nick’s years-long, carefully planned, and hard-earned investment. The property owner said, “Nicholas Mireles was my long-term friend, landscaper, and tenant. I was devastated at the news of his death and its horrible circumstances. Last year he and I entered into a contract for him to acquire his family’s residence. It is my intention to honor that agreement for the family.”

Annapolis Hope is a major effort to raise the funds to pay off the contract and save the Mireles family home.

All of Annapolis has a unique opportunity to showcase humanity, love for our community, and support for the Mireles family by raising $247,000 to ensure that Nick’s family doesn't bear the burden of eviction on top of tragic loss.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Annapolis Maritime Museum and its volunteers, Annapolis Hope is hosting this cruise on June 11, 2024 – the 1-year anniversary of this tragedy – to support our fundraising efforts. Tickets include adult beverages and fine food donated by Caliente Grill and a gorgeous sunset cruise on the skipjack Wilma Lee.

All proceeds support the purchase of the Mireles Family Home. Organizers ask individuals, corporations, and foundations or anyone unable to attend to make direct donations via PayPal, sponsored by Marshall Hope Corporation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Annapolis. Donations may be tax deductible.

Event organizers encourage the entire Annapolis and Anne Arundel County community to encircle the Mireles family with the care and concern they deserve. The trauma suffered by the widows and children of the deceased are best comforted by tangible support, including direct donations and attendance to Annapolis Hope.
