HOME WAVES / Intersection AIR Open Process

TABLEAU STATIONS is an interdisciplinary performing arts platform engaging local and global questions of place, precarity, and presence. Through experiential research, site-specific and communal social arts practices, videos/film, and multimedia dance performances, numerous place-based projects have been created in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally (in the US, Germany, Italy, Czechia, Taiwan, India, South Korea, and Japan). Initiated by interdisciplinary artist and dancer Isak Immanuel, projects are in collaboration with many renowned dancers, musicians, and fellow artists, including Marina Fukushima (SF), Surjit Nongmeikapam (Manipur), Anna Halprin (Marin), Yuko Kaseki (Berlin), Luigi Coppola (Lecce/Brussels), Alec Soth (Minneapolis), and Pijin Neji (Kyoto). Projects have been supported in part by Japan-US Friendship Commission/NEA, Attakkalari India Biennial, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Taipei Artist Village, YBCA, CounterPULSE, Center for Cultural Innovation, SF Arts Commission, Akiyoshidai International Art Village, Dock11 Berlin, Fabrica Europa, and Headlands Center for the Arts.

HOME WAVES / Intersection AIR Open ProcessHOME WAVES is an interdisciplinary performance project navigating precarity and placemaking through a nuanced lens of body, sound, and camera. With new collaborative layers, the open process context for October 11th is focused on generating a sonic-visual-movement iteration of the segment “Festival of boundaries”. It will feature live instrumentation by the musicians Cheryl E. Leonard and Kanoko Nishi-Smith along with video installation and dance performance by Isak Immanuel, Marina Fukushima, Crystal Mask-Caraway, and Efrem Baluyot (fellow tenants with Mercy Housing), and for camera, Surjit Nongmeikapam (Manipur based dance artist).Developed through several site-specific creations, fragments of searching for home, and research into the repurposing of marginalized urban spaces for affordable housing, the multi-year project HOME WAVES is an ongoing collaborative traversing coastlines, apartments, and a series of indeterminate landscapes.A full length theatrical iteration was presented in August of 2023 at ODC’s State of Play Festival and for 2025, a large scale outdoor site-specific iteration is currently being developed in San Francisco’s Mission Bay..Dance, Performance: Isak Immanuel, Marina Fukushima, Crystal Mask-Caraway, Efrem Baluyot + additional performance for camera by Surjit NongmeikapamLive Music, Sound: Cheryl E. From a cross-cultural perspective, her creative focus is on the themes of silence, family, and intergenerational relationships. She has a BFA in Dance from Butler University and MFA in Dance from the University of Iowa. Along with creating her own artistic works, she has performed with numerous companies and choreographers, including KUNST-STOFF, ODC, project agora, Lenora Lee Dance, and Tableau Stations, touring and taking part in immersive residencies across the US, Germany, Greece, Peru, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. Cheryl E. Leonard is a composer, performer and instrument builder whose works investigate sounds, structures, and objects from the natural world. Her projects often feature one-of-a-kind sculptural instruments and field recordings from remote locales. She uses microphones to explore the subtle intricacies of sounds and develops compositions that highlight these unique voices. Leonard holds a BA from Hampshire College and an MA from Mills College, both in music composition. Kanoko Nishi-Smith is a performer and a teacher, a resident of the SF/Bay Area. Kanoko holds a BA in Classical Music Performance, and a MA in Early Childhood Education from Mills College. She integrates her foundational background in Western/Japanese classical and avant-garde music with her interests in human development and social welfare, through a boundary-crossing inquiry into the nature of human behavior, the human perceptions of the concepts such as “beauty”, “morality” and “pleasure”. Surjit Nongmeikapam is a choreographer, dancer, and a performing artist primarily based in Manipur, India and working in numerous collaborative and communal contexts globally. He is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Nachom Arts Foundation. He studied choreography from the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography, Bangalore under the guidance of legendary guru Dr. Maya Rao (Didi). He is one of the few dancers and choreographer in Manipur to engage with experimental contemporary dance forms. Isak Immanuel is an interdisciplinary visual and movement artist making work in outdoor urban environments, theaters, museums, and quotidian spaces (in 2004, he initiated Tableau Stations with the project Floor of Sky). He grew up in the contrasting areas of the mesas of Taos, New Mexico and East Los Angeles. Alternately based in San Francisco and living and working nomadically, his creative practice is informed by a myriad of between spaces, working and researching extensively throughout the US West Coast, Italy, Germany, Czechia, India, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
