Join our Director of Gardens, Jason Kamp and Karolyn Schalk, Master Gardner for a Home Compost & Waste Reduction Workshop happening at the Soil & Stars Education Center. Join us for a educational and informative session on how to reduce waste at home through composting. Learn practical tips and tricks to turn your kitchen scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden. This hands-on workshop will teach you everything you need to know to start your composting and waste reduction journey.   • Ecological/environment impact*...the "why?"....compost as VALUABLE resource.

  • Backyard/garden waste, solutions for backyard compost.
  • Types of bins, tips for success, problems and troubleshooting.
  • Vermicomposting-Dig into the world of worms.
  • In-bed composting -- mesh waste basket, 4"PVC with holes.
  • Lasagna mulching & "compost in place" strategies.
  • Using finished compost in your garden.
  • Community composting initiatives .


*50% of the typical bag of household garbage set out at the curb is compostable. Close to 25% is food scraps alone, with the remaining waste a combination of paper/cardboard, yard trimmings and wood waste. - ILSR, Institute for Local Self-Reliance

What does the cost of this program cover?

Your ticket to this program covers attendance at this four-hour long program that includes an indoor talk, outdoor garden/compost/windrow tour, and hands-on interactive garden/compost experience. You will also receive access to take-home information on home compost/waste reduction.

Non-Member tickets also include the cost of admission to the farm for a day. Please note that because this program runs on a Sunday when the farm is closed to the public (except for private classes), this farm admission should be used on another day that the farm is open within the year of 2024.

What should I wear?

Dress in layers to be prepared to both sit inside for an hour and walk around outside (less than a mile on a hilly path) for an hour, and work outside in the market garden for 1.5 - 2 hours.

Programs run rain or shine. Dress for the weather if your program takes you outside!

No ticket refunds within 2 weeks of the program except in the case of Gorman Heritage Farm canceling the program
