HIV 101 basics

HIV 101: This one-day training is designed to help participants analyze basic information, core messages, values, and practices related to HIV/AIDS prevention education while instilling a caring and supportive attitude toward people living with HIV/AIDS. This training is recommended for prevention staff that may require fundamental HIV/AIDS education instruction and is also ideal for those who are interested in a basic refresher training.

Audience: Health educators, outreach workers, mental health professionals, nurses, case managers, public health professionals, social workers, and substance abuse professionals.

Objectives:

• Discuss the natural history of HIV

• Explain the basic biology of HIV • Explain HIV transmission routes

• Explain HIV/AIDS Symptoms

• Explain HIV testing & Window Period

• Recognize that HIV is treated with antiretroviral drugs and that treatment involves prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections

• Describe the major elements of HIV care, prevention and control programs

• Resources for more information
