About this event

Join Prof Dr Ryan Thibodeau of St John Fisher University on a walking tour of the Gary Beikirch Memorial Park (Highland Park South). This much loved section of Highland Park was once home to three 19th century county-run social welfare institutions: an almshouse (poorhouse), "insane asylum," and penitentiary. For about a half century, deceased "inmates" of these institutions were interred in a cemetery of unmarked graves.

Professor Thibodeau will explain the 1984 discovery of the burial ground, the ensuing research into this chapter of local history, and his recent collaborative efforts to properly honor the deceased.

The tour will begin in the Remember Garden; park at the Lilac Adventure Zone (249 Highland Avenue) and you will be directed to this location. (Please note the tour requires the ability to walk and stand throughout the hour -long presentation.)

Rain date is May 29th at 7:00 pm; if necessary, registrants will be notified .
