Dr. LaSheba Hilliard's engaging presentation is apart of the Upward Light Community Cyphers Instructional Webinar Series! This presentation explores how hip-hop can be a powerful tool in transition planning for middle and high school students in urban settings. By integrating hip-hop’s themes of resilience, ambition, and self-expression, educators can engage students in meaningful discussions about their future goals in post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.
Dr. LaSheba W. Hilliard is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis and does contractual work at Grand Canyon University with the College of Education department. With over 15 years of experience in K–12 education, she has taught students with a wide range of disabilities, including autism, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, and emotional and behavioral disorders. She was also the 504 and IDEA Coordinator at one of the schools she served.
Dr. Hilliard is passionate about inclusive practices, transition planning, and supporting students in mild to moderate self-contained classrooms. In addition to teaching, she mentors aspiring educators. She also advocates for mental health and Black women and girls with ADHD. Her work is rooted in a commitment to equity, empowerment, and community engagement.
