The rocks of Death Valley are awesome and varied, and tell a multitude of stories about the Earth’s past.

Join paleontologist Dr. Torrey Nyborg as he reveals one of these past worlds by reading the clues left behind in the rocks. A world different from the Death Valley of today: lusher, greener, filled with rivers and lakes.

This program is for both geo enthusiasts and geo novices.

DVI Platinum Programs are led by subject matter experts that have done their original research in Death Valley, written books or papers on the subjects, and are recognized as experts in their fields.

Dr. Nyborg has been doing research in Death Valley since 1999 and has several ongoing research projects.

This program is provided by the Death Valley Institute (DVI), the educational division of the Death Valley Natural History Association (DVNHA).

PROGRAM DETAILS

Dr. Nyborg has previously presented this program under the titles Hiking the Neogene, and Hike into Death Valley's Past.

Meet: at 8:45 at the flagpole in front of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. Please bring signed and dated Participant Agreement.

At least 2 liters of water required.

Participants and leaders will caravan in their own private vehicles to hike start location, about 5 miles away.

Hike is rated “moderate”, approximately 4 miles round-trip.

Hike is over fairly flat terrain, but ground is uneven and unstable – composed of gravel, small cobbles, and rocks; participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.
Weather can be variable. Dressing in layers of comfortable clothing is recommended.
At least 2 liters per person required.
Participants responsible for own lunch and snacks.

Group should be back to their cars by early afternoon, 1:00 – 2:00 PM.
