Aperçu

Discover the unique habitats along Netarts Spit with Portland Audubon and WEBS and learn about snowy plover monitoring efforts and more.

Explore Netarts Spit with Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS, Portland Audubon, beachgrass researchers from Oregon State University, and OR State Parks and discover the dynamic ecosystem supported by this narrow stretch of land. Shifting sands, dune grasses, and plovers are part of the story for the day. It is ~6 miles to the end of spit (12 miles round trip) and participants should expect to spend a full day exploring and hiking. Unsure if you want to commit to the full hike? No worries, we plan to have a few stops and opportunities to hike smaller distances and amounts of time. Our volunteers will help lead you back to your cars.

Join us on this beach journey, learn about plover and beachgrass monitoring efforts, and explore the spit and how it is changing over time!

What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, lunch, and snacks are a must! Binoculars are highly encouraged as a strong focus will be placed on birds! The climate can change quickly along the coast, ranging from warm to cool and breezy, so please bring the gear you need to stay comfortable.

Difficulty: Moderate + due to the length and challenges of walking on soft sands and wet sand.

Meeting Location: Register for details.

Registration Required: This event will take place outdoors. If bad weather develops, an alternate plan will be communicated to the registered participants.

Cost: There is no cost to attend this program. Tax-exempt donations to Netarts Bay WEBS to enable programs like this are encouraged, but not required.
