Twelve sessions of High Tunnel Growing will be held at the Currituck County Extension Center on the third Friday each month beginning in April 2024 (targeted).  Each monthly session will have two components.  One part will be hands on in the tunnel demonstrating current crop progress and high tunnel production practices (1.5 hours).  The second half will be subject matter presentations.  Each session will include lunch with an educational speaker and time for networking and farmer knowledge/experience sharing.  Speakers will include specialists from N.C. A&T, and NCSU as well as successful high tunnel growers in NC and VA, 

Production practices to be demonstrated include but are not limited to: mulch plastic laying in a high tunnel, trellising and other support systems, pruning for indoor growth, high value species and variety selection for high tunnel production, high tunnel ventilation and temperature control, high tunnel pest issues – insect, weed, and disease, to till or not to till, soil sampling and amending for high tunnel, storm preparation for high tunnels, planting dates/temperatures for high tunnel plant species, other practices to further extend high tunnel growing season

Educational presentation subject matter will include but are not limited to:  High tunnel site selection and preparation, high tunnel designs pros and cons, USDA NRCS and other programs for resource assistance for high tunnel growing, growing higher value vegetables and fruits in a high tunnel, marketing high value vegetables, maximizing out of season production and sales, light considerations when growing out of season fruits and vegetables, permaculture vs annual planting in high tunnels
