The Office of the Chief Technology Officer provides leadership and direction on data, technology, innovation and strategy across the Department of Health and Human Services. Areas of focus include promoting open data and its use to create value, driving more efficient operations through technology utilization, and coordinating strategy across the Department to improve the lives of the American people and the performance of the Department.

On December 6 and 7, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will host an Opioid Symposium and Code-a-Thon to promote and employ innovative ways to leverage technology and data to address the nationwide opioid epidemic.

Symposium
Are you interested in how data and technology can be leveraged to respond to the opioid epidemic?  The HHS Opioid Symposium will showcase promising practices in data and technology that have improved outcomes in communities across the country that state and local leaders can bring back to their communities. 
The Symposium is taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on December 6th at HHS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Code-a-Thon
Calling all computer programmers, public health experts, data scientists, researchers, and innovators!
We need your help to develop data-driven solutions to combat the opioid epidemic, building on <A HREF="https://www.hhs.gov/opioids/index.html" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> HHS’ five-part strategy</A>. Are you up for the challenge?

The Code-a-Thon is taking place  from 1 p.m. December 6 through 6 p.m. December 7 at HHS headquarters in Washington, D.C. This is an in-person event only.
Code-a-Thon: Important Registration Information
Interested participants will be required to form teams that consist of 3 - 5 individuals. Team will indicate the following qualifications:
<UL>
<LI>Team Skillsets: Team indicates that they possess computer programming, data analytics, and end user design skillsets;</LI>
<LI>Team Multidisciplinary Expertise: Team indicates expertise in any 2 of the following areas relevant to the challenge tracks: health, analytics, social science, design, and/or engineering; and</LI>
<LI>Team Experience: The team indicates that they collectively have 10 years of experience in their respective fields and/or previously participated in a public or private sector sponsored Code-a-Thon</LI>
</UL>
About 25 teams will be able to participate due to limited space. Teams who meet the above qualifications will receive an email that their registration is confirmed.
To be considered for participation, each team must submit one intention to participate. We ask that each team is pre-formed prior to submitting their intent to participate and that each team consists of 3-5 individuals.
Please designate one Team Lead to register on behalf of your team. Please do not submit your intention to participate if you have not formed a team yet or if your Team Lead has already registered.
