Join us on Tuesday, June 25 at 5 PM for an exciting herpetology walk guided by herpetologist and founder of the Maine Big Night project, Greg LeClair. Discover the diverse habitats and fascinating lifestyles of frogs, salamanders, and turtles living in our refuge.

As we explore, we’ll listen for calls and work on identifying the various critters we encounter. This walk offers a unique opportunity to learn about the rich herpetological diversity in Maine, understand their ecosystems, and gain insight into the life of these remarkable amphibians and reptiles. We will also learn about what we can do to help conserve these essential animals.

All ages welcome!

Weather Policy

Hirundo will cancel a program when weather presents an unsafe condition for participants. Due to the unpredictability of the weather, Hirundo reserves the right to cancel programs at any point when it is deemed unsafe. Participants will be notified of cancellations via the contact info provided at registration.

Final determination for cancellation is dependent on weather. Weather related cancellations will be made 3 hours in advance of the program. Please check your email before traveling to Hirundo Wildlife Refuge.


Refund Policy

If Hirundo cancels a program/event a full refund will be issued to every participant. The refund will be issued via Eventbrite and may take several days to complete. Cancellations and notice of refunds will be sent to the email provided on eventbrite at time of registration.

Ticket Holder must request a refund on a program they can no longer attend 5 days prior to the event.

Requests for refunds less than 5 days before the event or after the event will not be honored.


Rain Date Policy

Hirundo may choose to offer an alternative rain date for some events. This date will be posted at the time of event advertising and the ticket holder commits to being available for either date. No refunds will be given to ticket holders who cannot attend the rain-date unless they request a refund more than 5 days prior to the rescheduled date.

Hirundo is a 2,400 acre nature preserve, spanning Pushaw and Dead Streams, Lac d’Or (lake), vast wetlands, including , mixed hardwood and evergreen forests and a 40-acre bog. Only 10 miles from the University of Maine, Orono Campus, visitors paddle canoes free of charge and watch playful river otters, breeding Wood Ducks, Bald Eagles, and Osprey in the tranquil beauty. While hiking, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing, one might encounter moose, deer, red fox, muskrat, beaver, mink, otter, black bear, bobcat, fisher, and ermine.
