This presentation examines the development of riverside industry, along with associated historic water management practices, within the Holme Valley. The presentation draws on research undertaken as part of the Nature’s Holme Landscape Recovery Project, focusing upon the heritage importance of ten weirs and the mills with which they were associated.
In particular, the presentation will consider the ways in which the River Holme was harnessed and manipulated in order to power the developing textile industry. Emphasis will be placed upon the interaction between the riverine landscape and the products and processes of this industry, with evidence drawn from historic maps, documentary sources, and archaeological investigation. Ultimately, the presentation will attempt to highlight the differing, and at times competing, understandings of the River Holme as an economic, environmental, and cultural asset.
Places are free for this event, but booking is essential.
