About this event

  • 45 minutes

A unique opportunity to have a guided tour of the famous cliff railway's engine room, learn about the history and recent engineering project, plus experience a free return ride on this historic funicular in the heart of Scarborough’s South Bay.

Cliff Railways were one of the great astounding engineering inventions of Victorian times. Scarborough was the first British resort to create these fantastic funicular railways to transport visitors up and down its steep cliffs. Five opened on the North and South Bays between 1875 and 1930. Heritage Open Days offers a unique opportunity to visit behind the scenes at Central Tramway, one of the last 2 remaining in Scarborough today.

The tour will take you underneath the top station to the engine room, an area usually closed to the public. You will discover the marvellous machinery and exciting engineering that still work hard today to carry almost half a million visitors every year. The tramway has recently undergone its largest engineering upgrade in over 50 years. On the 45 minute tour you’ll learn about the work carried out, and how modern computer technology now drives this funicular railway, as well as its unique history linked to the town. At the end of the tour, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and take a free return ride. Tours are limited to 12 people and places must be booked in advance.
