Two-part reading group with Chafa Ghaddar

What are the possibilities of documenting, archiving, and dreaming in the midst of rupture? Can creative processes and togetherness help reaffirm a sense of sovereignty?Here and Elsewhere brings together a selection of texts and images that move through poetry, drawing, writing, and speculative gestures. Including works by Omar Berrada, Ibrahim Nehme, bell hooks, Michael Taussig and others, the programme shares an insistence on vocalising—on bearing witness while tracing ways to resist and reimagine.As the “here” is reshaped by ongoing upheaval, the “elsewhere” becomes charged—more urgent, more assertive, at times distant or unreachable. Please register for each session separately.<h4>Bio:</h4>Chafa Ghaddar (b. 1986) is a Lebanese artist based in Dubai. Wall painting and surface finishing are central to Ghaddar’s practice. She explores the use of fresco as a contemporary mode of making, as well as other techniques, and works equally with murals, painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media. She executes site-specific and public artworks, and has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Beirut, Dubai, New York, Brussels, and Verona.She has been awarded several artist fellowships and residencies, including the Tashkeel Studio Critical Practice Program in 2018/2019 (with a solo exhibition), the Salama Emerging Artist Fellowship (SEAF, 2018), and the artist- in-residence program at the Villa Empain (Brussels, 2015), which also awarded her the Boghossian Art Prize for painting in 2014. Her work is in the collections of the Boghossian Art Foundation (Brussels), Tashkeel Art Foundation (UAE), and Fondation Saradar (Lebanon).Ghaddar has been developing a teaching practice for the last five years and has been conducting lessons across different art institutions in the UAE alongside NYU Abu Dhabi as well Istituto Marangoni, Dubai.
