D.C. Native and saxophonist Herb Scott is a rising star on the Washington, D.C. Jazz Scene. Herb has been making his rounds as a leader of many bands around town since returning home from studying at Michigan State University as a Jazz Studies Major in 2009 and released his first album as a leader “Introducing Herb Scott on Alto Saxophone, a NU-Jazz Collective” in the late Fall of 2011. He is set to release his new album “The RE-Gentrification” this Summer 2015.
Herb Scott was born August 1st, 1968 in Washington, D.C. and began playing the saxophone at the age of 10 at the Sitar Center for the Arts, an after-school program that offers low-cost music lessons for children. His love affair with the saxophone began and he quickly improved after much diligent practice and mentorship from teacher Rhonda Buckley. At the age of 12, Herb began studying classical saxophone at the prestigious Levine School of Music and at 13 was invited by future mentor, saxophonist and educator Davey Yarborough, to perform with Grammy-award winning Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis on Capitol Hill for a Congressional event. Herb attended the world-famous Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts and during this time he performed with the Legendary Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock at the Verizon Center during a halftime show. He appeared on the last episode of the second season of Comedy Central’s Chappelle Show in 2004 alongside acting and comedy legend Dave Chappelle when he returned to Duke Ellington, his alma mater, to shoot an episode. Unfortunately this episode is unavailable to buy due to licensing issues.
Herb studied Jazz Studies at Michigan State University under the direction of Jazz legend Rodney Whitaker and studied Jazz saxophone with Professor Diego Rivera from 2004-2009. During this time Herb improved greatly and toured with the MSU Jazz Band to New York where they played at the Dizzy’s Coca Cola-Club and at Lincoln Center and as a leader at the world famous Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, Michigan.
During Herb’s career he has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts debuting there at age 13, Universal Studios Orlando, Constitution Hall, the Library of Congress, The Detroit Jazz Fest, the East Lansing Jazz Fest, the DC Jazz Fest and has performed at almost every Jazz venue in the Washington, D.C. area.
