Headwaters Tour

The mission of the Water Education Foundation, an impartial, nonprofit organization, is to inspire understanding of water and catalyze critical conversations to build bridges and inform collaborative decision-making.Our history dates back to 1977 when California was in the second year of a major drought and water was at the forefront of the news. The Foundation’s articles of incorporation were filed on Feb. 27 of that year, creating a nonprofit, nonpolitical, tax-exempt educational organization. Today, the Sacramento-based Foundation remains a vital source of nonpartisan, in-depth information about water resource issues in California and the West. Taking a steady pulse of the water world, the Foundation provides a vast repertoire of educational materials, products and services such as our water tours, lectures, conferences, workshops, our flagshipWestern Waternews articles and Project WET (Water Education Today).

Water Education Foundation

This 2-day, 1-night tour explores the Sierra Nevada to examine water issues that happen upstream but have dramatic impacts downstream.

This 2-day, 1-night tour travels through the Sierra Nevada foothills, into the mountains and around the Lake Tahoe Basin to explore the impact of fires on California water supply and quality in the American and Yuba watersheds, as well as forest management and tree mortality, meadow restoration and climate change. Tour stops include the Yuba and American rivers, Tahoe and Eldorado national forests, meadow and river restoration sites and Lake Tahoe. The tour begins and ends at the Foundation's office in Sacramento.
