We will be offering CMEs, Nursing, PA, Pharmacy, Pharmacy Technician, and Psychology credits, as well as social work and CASAC continuing education credits!

This one-day summit aims to enhance your knowledge and experience in wound care for Persons Who Use Drugs (PWUD). The discussion will cover topics such as the risks associated with xylazine use, best practices for identifying and treating wounds, conventional strategies for improving engagement in wound care among PWUDs, and harm reduction-focused resources and recommendations for enhancing the health of this population. You will have the opportunity to ask questions to experts, collaborate with your peers, share your experiences, and even practice wound care intervention.

Please find below an outline of the different modules that will be covered in this training program:


Module 1: Introduction

a. Overview of substance use (type, route of administration) and its connection to wounds

b. What is Xylazine?

c. Overview of Xylazine’s unique impact on wounds

d. Emerging trends regarding Xylazine (prevalence in supply)

e. Testing the supply for Xylazine

f. Xylazine’s impact on overdose

g. Implications for overdose reversal with Narcan


Module 2: Wound Care Assessment

This module will cover the protocol for completing a "basic" wound care assessment, which is aimed at individuals doing street outreach or other non-medical professionals who do not have specialized training in this area.


Module 3: Conducting a Brief Negotiated Interview for Referral

This module will demonstrate a brief negotiated interview designed to engage individuals with wounds in a conversation about healthcare and facilitate a referral to specialized care, where appropriate.


Module 4: Additional Resources & Strategies

a. Access to wound care kits

i. Recommendations for essential supplies to be included

ii. Strategies for accessing kits (where could they be available)

iii. Making the argument that budget expenditure is cost-effective?


b. Enhancing Organizational Resources to Provide Direct Wound Care

i. Assessing staff capacity to provide wound care (to what disciplines are there access?)

ii. What strategies could be implemented in service, given staffing capacity?

iii. Basic wound care for non-medical professionals?


c. Increasing Access to Medical Professionals Who Can Provide Wound Care

i. Building collaborative relationships with qualified medical professionals

ii. Establishing evidence-based referral procedures


d. Monitoring the Supply/Mitigating the Consequences

i. Testing the supply

ii. Build awareness of the supply source/communicate with suppliers

iii. Communicate with PWUD/provide education

We use recovery coaching, harm reduction, advocacy, peer support groups, and community connections. With those tools we support, guide, deepen and cheerlead wellness. Our participants are addresing mental wellness, substance use disorders, or supporting people in recovery.
