Frequently asked questions

Who is this for?

Whether you’re new to teaching, a veteran educator, a graduate student who hopes to teach, or a potter interested in personal growth, this training is valuable for all levels of experience.

Will this change my studio?

Yes, it will make is safer.

But I don't want my studio to become a behavioral health center. What about that?

We don't want that either! And that's not what will happen. Seventy percent of your students have already experienced trauma or are living with a traumatic injury. Many of them are showing up at your studio because throwing clay feels healing. This workshop just acknowledges that.

Is this therapy?

Nope. It's not therapy. It is therapeutic. You don't have to be a therapist to be therapeutic. Let's change the dialogue about who gets to be a healer.

I already know how to throw and I'm a great teacher. Am I going to have to change how I teach?

The beauty of this training is nothing changes in terms of the mechanics of how any one individual teaches or throws. You will be learning practices that will enrich your teaching. You may choose to include whatever is most valuable to you (and omit what is not).

Is this applicable to hand building?

Absolutely. Almost any of the practices we talk about can be applied to hand building. There are things about the pottery wheel and throwing that are uniquely healing, and we certainly emphasize that -- but all of the learning is applicable to hand building.
