About this event

What’s the difference between a happy hiker and a sad hiker? Our second annual Happy Hiker series, of course! Join us for six evening programs that include basic lessons on how to be a happy hiker, including first aid, map reading, choosing the right gear, and natural history. Based on the Hiker’s Ten Essentials and Leave No Trace principles, each evening program will include nature knowledge nuggets and a short, easy hike to practice what we’re learning! This series, full of fun activities, mini-challenges, and the opportunity to practice new skills will help make every hike safer and more enjoyable.

Night hiking can be a blast if you are prepared and adapt appropriately to the conditions. Take a twilight hike on one of our newest preserves and finish after dark! Learn how to hike safely on a darkening trail. Try out our headlamps or bring your own. (Lancaster Conservancy preserves are typically only open from dawn to dusk, so this is a special opportunity for some after-hours exploration!)

What to Expect This 3.5 mile “lollipop route” combines a section of Mill Creek Falls Nature Preserve with the Mason-Dixon Trail. It has varying terrain with some challenging sections that are steep and rocky and some sections along a gravel road. There is a restroom available on site. This series is recommended for ages 10 and up (anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult).

What to Bring Bring a headlamp if you have one (we will have some to lend) and your backpack with a first aid kit. Wear the shoes or boots you prefer to hike in. Bring water and a snack, and dress for the weather.
