Hand Tool Basics

Hand Tool Basics

1740 Broadway StCharlottesville, VA
Saturday, July 18  •  2 PM - 4 PM
Overview

Ever wonder why that shelf you cut and installed looks slightly wonky? Come learn the basics of measuring, marking, cutting and hammering.

Learn or get refreshed on the fundamentals of measuring, marking, cutting and hammering using hand tools.

This is a great class for beginners, and even those familiar with tools will learn a few new tricks. There will be ample time for practicing, and a “builder’s challenge” to apply the skills you’ve learned with scrap wood and a mission.

Tools used:

  • Measuring tape
  • Speed square and carpenter’s square
  • Hand saw - both push and pull saws
  • Clamps
  • Hammer
  • If time, we will also cover chisels, chalk lines, punches and sliding t-bevels!

Techniques taught:

  • Accurately measuring and marking
  • Securing wood with a clamp
  • Sawing with a pull or push saw
  • Nailing pieces of wood together

Workshop instructor

Erin “Soupy” Campbell has been building and teaching others to build for over 20 years. She lives in a 24’ long tiny house she crafted herself, and runs Carpentry Coach, in which she works alongside homeowners to accomplish their own home repairs and projects.
