Hammer Time
Overview

Forging a Hammer with a Striker

Hammer Time: Forging a Hammer with a Striker

Instructor: Logan Stowell

May 9, 10 and 17; 10 am - 4 pm daily

Participants will learn the complete process required to forge and finish their own 2 lb forging hammer. Instruction will cover punching and drifting the eye, forging the hammer to final shape, heat treating, and fitting a custom handle.

This is a three-day intensive workshop balancing demonstration, guided practice, and individual forging time. The hammer design emphasizes balance, durability, and real shop usability - not just a novelty project.

The majority of the work will be performed at the anvil using a striker system. Participants will pair up as they begin work, rotating roles between smith and striker. A variety of top and bottom tools will be used, with emphasis on efficient hammer control and clear communication between partners.

The goal of the workshop is for each student to leave with at least one fully finished hammer. Depending on time, additional hammers or variations may be explored.

This is an all-levels workshop with a strong focus on safety, intentional design, and sound forging technique. Proper shop etiquette, body mechanics, and striker communication will be taught and enforced throughout. Beginners will gain a solid foundation in fundamental blacksmithing skills, while experienced smiths will refine efficiency, accuracy, and workflow.

All steel and handle materials will be provided.
Ages: 18+

Come learn the art of blacksmithing in a fun, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment! Pound out the stress of the year as you learn to properly swing a hammer, forge metal, and have fun shaping hot steel!
